The Paper Lantern

I leave for vacation today, and will return to the blog in Mid-July.  I thought I'd leave you with a new video post, this time a project. My paper lanterns have been featured on Design Sponge, in magazines and at Alt Design Summit, but believe it or not, I've never done a tutorial here on Poppy Haus! When I started showing my projects, I didn't know that I needed to include tutorials. So, I made a short video to show you how I make a basic lantern. You can use any size white paper lantern, any size cupcake liner. If you want, you can layer the larger papers with a striped mini-liners to add dimension, or try using french pastry papersJust watch and learn!

Special thanks go to my camera dude Pete Maloney and my friend Zach for lending me his beautiful music. www.roguewavemusic.com

Everything Is Illuminated

design*sponge

I finished up my Design*Sponge submission.  Now that it's done I thought I'd share the finished product with you (they said it was okay).  I made a "Gilded Feather Pendant" from painters tape, craft wire and spray paint. Photo tutorial below...

Mix Tape

Design*Sponge is running a DIY competition this month.  I love competitions. The challenge is to design something for the home using painters tape. I'm on vacation in the mountains right now, but I packed my drill, some wire, spray paint and painters tape. Entries are due by July 29th.  Click here for more details.

Be Prepared

I picked up my copy of the Design*Sponge print edition over the weekend and am now longing for the days of summer camp. They chose this year's theme in part because it is the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts. You can imagine the badges that I collected over the years. Chock-full of camp inspired DIY, activities, recipes, and a feature on Camp Wandawega which looks like it's out of Moonrise Kingdom, the print copy is every bit as cool as the blog, plus you get to hold it in your hot little hands. The summer newspaper is available exclusively at Anthropologie stores for $5.

Still every bit as relevant as when I was young...

The Girl Scout Law

I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and to respect myself and others,
respect authority, use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.

Round Too

Confession.  I sold my cupcake paper chandeliers in successive transactions on Etsy last month, and because I was going out of town when the orders were placed, I literally sold the pair hanging from my ceiling.  I meant to replace them, but I also wanted to try out a new idea I had for a larger, single chandelier for our new dining room space in Petaluma.  Using the same technique as the Anenome version, this time using 3" deep wrapped parchment paper baking cups, I paired the chandelier with a red fabric cord and ceiling fixture from West Elm. I left off the center papers on this piece, because the light is much more diffused.  To tell you the truth, I like this one more, and I think it looks more like the Rhododendron chandelier from Anthropologie.  For the tutorial, just reference the original post.

Soaking It Up

This week Poppy Haus was featured on Design*SpongeI think my favorite thing about the whole experience was getting to read all of the wonderful comments people left about my project. I just want to give everyone who has started reading my blog a big high five and to say thanks to Design*Sponge for the feature.  Have a happy weekend!
