Being Julia

As I can't imagine I will ever have a film crew in my home again, unless I win Publisher's Clearing House, if that's still a thing, I'm sharing some pictures from the day that Blurb came to Petaluma and taped an interview and cooking segment with me. It was a real life Julia Child moment. The video is part of a marketing piece for their recent Food Fair in San Francisco to promote their cookbook authors. I snapped a few photos in between filming...

And here it is, my "speaking on camera" debut, about my book. Oh boy...

DIY Arrow Project + Video Tutorial

I am so excited to share this project with you today! I collaborated with Scotch Colors and Patterns Duct Tape to bring to life this DIY arrow tutorial which features two of my favorite materials: wooden dowels and duct tape. Watch the video below to see how it's done. I've included a materials list and instructions at the end of the post. Enjoy!

Materials:

  • 5/16 inch wooden dowels (cut to 18 ")
  • Medium weight white card stock
  • Assorted Duct Tape- Scotch brand has beautiful colors and patterns, and characters including Julius from Paul Frank!
Tools:
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • Rotary hand tool (Dremel)
  • Drill with 5/16 bit
To make the arrows, first lay out layers of tape on card stock, covering both sides of the paper. Cut out the decorative end, rounding the tops and bottoms into a flat bottom tear drop shape.

Next you'll need to put on some protective glasses and using a Dremel or other hand held rotary tool cut the dowel to 18 inches, then make a 4" cut through the center of one end.

Simply insert the decorative tape pieces into the cut end. To finish wrap thinner strips of tape around the dowels and place in a vase for display.

Screen Test

I have a lot of irons in the fire right now...school is wrapping up (I can read blueprints!), I'm working on a new design for the site to launch sometime this summer, and I'm beginning a new video project for Poppy Haus that will occasionally put me on the other side of the camera.  It's this last bit that has me contemplating things.  Are you comfortable in your own skin? I'll admit it, when it comes to pictures I'm my own worst critic. I've talked about this before.  I took a little practice video of Wylie and I hanging out together to test out a video app and see how I looked on camera, and it took a few tries for me to really see myself objectively and realize that I didn't look that bad. I was so distracted by the little things that I'm pretty sure no one else can see. Video is funny because you see yourself talking, which looks incredibly weird. It's not like looking in the mirror, you get to see what everyone else sees all the time. I really need to get over myself, because I have a some fun ideas to share, so to conquer my fear of the camera, and for your viewing pleasure, I give you "Heather and Wylie Talk Animals", a completely unedited, grainy picture with no plot. Enjoy!

Oh Happy Day

Seven Henrietta Street

I found this today while checking out Rockstar Diaries, a really sweet family blog.  Sometimes you just have to post something because it's so pretty.
